July 11

THURSDAY - July 11th, 2002 - We had a pretty good night’s sleep. Our bodies are still on daylight savings time. We are 7 hours ahead now. We had breakfast with Pastor David and his wife, Luci.  Now we are about to begin our journey.  Our luggage has been loaded onto the van.  Pastor David took the extra luggage and the other pastors to the bus station and sent them on to Eldoret ahead of us.  We waited about 2 hours for him to return.

While waiting, we heard beautiful singing coming from the church. Tim was in charge of the video camera and saw a perfect opportunity to video some great footage. Tim walked up to the men outside of the church and asked permission.  They looked at Tim and wondered why he would want to do that. It turned out to be a funeral.  Needless to say, we did not video nor tape the music. How embarrassing for Tim.  He apologized and we enjoyed giving Tim a hard time!

Went to the Ugandan embassy for our visas for later in the week.  It took a couple of hours. Although, it could have taken longer.  They wanted us to come back at 4:00 in the afternoon, but God changed someone’s heart. But we now have our visas.  Let’s go, this van is hot!

We just experienced our first encounter with the traffic and the driving in Nairobi!  These people are driving on the wrong side of the road!  And what is only two lanes of traffic is turning out to be at least six!  Woah!

Our first day in Africa! We are on our way to Eldoret.  A 6 hour van ride. Our first stop the animal orphanage.  We saw the lions, leopards, monkeys, and wart hogs.  There was a warning sign when you first come into the area that says, "Children and warthogs have the right away!"  Very interesting.  So were the warthogs!!

It’s lunch time! And since we are about to pass "Carnivore’s Restaurant", we see no reason not to try it out. The travel channel gives high reviews for this classy one of a kind restaurant. And were they right!! We were able to taste gazelle, antelope, pork, chicken, beef, crocodile (taste like chicken), zebra, lamb, hart beast, and real chicken. The cats and the monkeys played all around us while we ate. Our health department would have a fit.  Made for great entertainment.

After the meal our long van ride began. I know I will have to visit the chiropractor when I get back. Hold on to your seats! This is going to be a bumpy ride!

We stopped at Rift Valley and saw the beautiful country of Africa. Along the side of the road the zebra’s were a beautiful sight. Took pictures of the Maasai children taking care of their cows and sheep. Although, it took a little persuasion and a few shillings to get their permission to take their picture. But it was truly worth it, don’t you think?

We had several police checks along the way. No problems! Although it was kind of scary at first.

Arrived at the Sirikwa Hotel in Nairobi around 11PM. We were put in the presidential suite. Nice big bed and big bathroom along with a big meeting room.  Don’t we feel special!  Tim and Robin and Doug and Naomi were given small rooms. Margaret got the extra bedroom off the presidential suite.
