HEY, GET OUT OF THE WAY!Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.Psalms 1:1 The trap is set once we walk in the counsel of the ungodly. You see, there is a progression (actually a regression). After allowing the philosophy of those who are without God to affect us we are no longer merely walking in the counsel we then are standing in the way of sinners. Years ago I traveled with a musical team representing the college I attended. We were singing in a town in New England whose main industry was a tannery. The odor was horrendous. The entire town smelled like a dead animal. As we sat with our hosts at dinner I finally had to ask, “How can you people stand this smell?” To which someone answered, “What smell?” These dear folk spent 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year in this stench until they don’t even notice it. Because of society’s acceptance of sinful behavior we are constantly bombarded with sinful ways. Let’s be careful not to stand still for it or we will not be bothered by the smell.

It is the Hebrew word esher. It actually mixes the idea of being happy with several exclamation points. Sort of like happiness with an attitude! I like to call it idiotically happy.The world is looking for happiness. We are urged to turn to sex, drugs, money, leisure, possessions, idleness, and a myriad of other sources for some level of happiness - a happiness that leaves one empty and searching. Yet, the Bible presents a very simple formula for real happiness walk not in the counsel of the ungodly. Gods people too often are impressed by the worlds stuff. We seem to long for the worlds approval. We want to be accepted for our dress, our speech, our manner. We dont want to be seen as nerds or prudes. Because of these misplaced desires for acceptance we are drawn to the counsel of the ungodly. Remember, the ungodly are not just those who are wicked but those who are without God.You want happiness? Seek Godly counsel. Look to Gods Word and Gods people.

They Call Me 3.6A few weeks ago I saw some young teenagers walking through our church parking lot. I went out to strike up a conversation and invite them to our youth meeting. I went to the tall, handsome young man who seemed to be the leader of the small group and asked him his name. He said, My name is Five, while holding up five fingers. I said, Your name is Five? Your Momma didnt name you Five. No, he said grinning from ear to ear, My Momma named me James but they call me Five. Whats your name? I said, They call me 3.6. Ever since then the neighborhood kids call me 3.6. I dont know if it will stick but I kind of like the name 3.6. Rev. 3.6! Dr. 3.6! Has a nice ring to it. Hey! How about Big Daddy Snoop Doggie Dog 3.6? What they call me may not be very important but take a look at this verse in Gods Word:O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. (Psalms 8:1)We serve a mighty God! A God so mighty that even His Name is most excellent! And like the psalmist says, Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. (Psalms 148:13)We should make it our business to praise the name of the Lord. Praise Him with the words we speak and the life we live. Praise the name of the Lord!
